Former Diplomat and Merchant Banker. Since 1985 director of various UK companies with world-wide interests. Currently Deputy Chairman of Hutchison Whampoa (Europe) Ltd. A former Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire and former Member of the North York Moors National Park Authority. Descendant of Sir John Johnstone MP the patron of William Smith.

PROFESSOR PETER RAWSON
Emeritus Professor of Geology, University of London. Lectured in University of London, at Queen Mary College (1966-83) and University College London, until taking early retirement in Sept 2003. Research interest is the Cretaceous Period, particularly its ammonite faunas. Chair of the International Subcommission on Cretaceous Stratigraphy (1994-2004); Associate Editor, Cretaceous Research; serves on several international and national scientific committees, and has published over 100 books and papers. More locally: President of the Yorkshire Geological Society (2002-2004); has long researched on the Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks of the Yorkshire Coast and is joint author of the Geologists’ Association guide to the area.

RALPH COYLE
Solicitor. Trained at British Leyland; joined the Fairey Group in 1974 as legal adviser (promoted to Company Secretary in 1977), Quaker Oats in 1981 as Company Secretary and Head of Legal and Public Relations, and Yorkshire Television in 1985 as Senior Legal Advisor and Company Secretary (appointed a main Board Director in 1990). Administered the YTV part of three ITV Telethons in 1988, 1990 and 1992 (raising over £6 million for regional charities and causes). Joined CANAL+ the French-based pay television group in 1996, carrying out a company secretarial and legal advisor’s role, and Commercial Union in 1998. Currently based in the York office of Rollits, solicitors, as a partner specialising in commercial law. Director of Leeds Media Initiative, a Yorkshire Forward-funded company formed to promote media businesses in and around Leeds.

COUNCILLOR DAVID JEFFELS
Scarborough Borough Council member since 1973, and Cabinet member for Tourism, Leisure and Community Services for the past four years.
He is currently Chairman of the British Resorts Association and of the York and North Yorkshire Playing Fields Association, Trustee and Council Member of the National Playing Fields Association, vice chairman of the Yorkshire Rural Community Council, and represents the Borough Council on the Board of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, North York Moors National Park Authority, the Yorkshire Tourist Board Council, and on the North Yorkshire Cultural Partnership.
A journalist working for regional newspapers, he was born and educated in Scarborough. He lives at West Ayton and is married to Marilyn and has two children, Lyndon, a barrister with the UNHCR in Sri Lanka, and a daughter, Siobhan, a legal executive in York.

Chartered Accountant. In practice in Scarborough for 41 years until retirement at the end of 2003. Served as President of the Humberside and District Society of Chartered Accountants in 1991/92 and on the National Council of the Institute from 1995 to 2003.Director of Scarborough Building Society from 1984 to date, chairman from 1994 to 2002. Currently vice chairman.Chairman of North Yorkshire Moors and Coast Business Advice Agency which deals with business start ups in the area. Chairman of Scarborough Flower Fund Homes from 1986 to date. The charity provides housing for those who have given voluntary service to the community and currently has built 86 units. Member and past Chairman of the Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers.
